Just completed B.Tech and want to get into IIM?
But meeting the minimum IIM eligibility criteria only makes you eligible to apply. It does not mean an IIM will shortlist you. So, how do you ensure a secure seat at IIM?
Ahead, we have shared graduation cutoff, CAT cutoff, age limit, category rules, B.Tech eligibility, and more in detail. Let’s find out!
The eligibility criteria for the flagship two-year MBA/PGP programs require a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% or equivalent marks. However, if the candidate belongs to the SC, ST, or PwD categories, the minimum criteria are 45%. This is true in the case of IIM Calcutta, where the same criteria apply for their MBA program.
Also, students in the final year can apply. If they are selected, their admission remains provisional until they provide the required proof that they have completed the degree required within the stipulated timeline.
In case your university calculates the CGPA, not the percentage, you should know that it is not enough to use just one universal formula.
The calculation will be done according to the guidelines provided by your university. If there is no such scheme in your university, then the policy of IIM Calcutta can serve as an example: the formula uses CGPA/maximum CGPA*100%.
| Category | Minimum Graduation Marks* |
| General / Open | 50% |
| EWS | 50% |
| NC-OBC | 50% |
| SC | 45% |
| ST | 45% |
| PwD | 45% |
*Equivalent CGPA may be accepted according to the applicable university/institution conversion rules.
A candidate with 50% graduation marks may technically qualify, while another candidate with 80% may still fail to secure a call from a particular IIM if their CAT performance or the institute's other shortlisting parameters are not competitive enough.
Do 12th marks matter for IIM admission? Class 12 marks generally do not determine basic eligibility for the flagship IIM MBA/PGP. But that does not mean your 12th marks are irrelevant.
Academic performance in Classes 10, 12, and after graduation may be considered by IIMs when determining shortlisting/selection scores. For example, IIM Calcutta takes into account academic performance as well as CAT while making selections for MBA for HR or any other specialization.
You can think of it this way:
12th marks may not stop you from applying, but they can influence how competitive your application becomes.
If you have recently finished Class 12 and are looking for the eligibility criteria for IIM after Class 12, then here is a key difference.
You cannot join the prestigious two-year IIM MBA/PGP directly after Class 12 because it demands a bachelor’s degree.
But you may opt for the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM).
For instance, the five-year IPM programme of IIM Indore has been designed keeping in mind the students who have either completed or are in the process of completing their class 12th. The 2026 domestic selection process criteria of the institute included those students who had passed their Class XII in 2024 or 2025 or appeared in 2026.
B.Tech graduates are fully eligible to apply for the regular two-year MBA/PGP programmes at IIMs. Engineering students make up a significant portion of the CAT applicant pool, but their eligibility depends on meeting the standard academic and entrance requirements.
The passing grade for a General category aspirant is normally around 50%. However, getting past 50% is just the beginning point.
For example, IIM Calcutta's MBA 2026-28 policy specified an 85 overall CAT percentile minimum for Open-category candidates at its initial screening stage, along with sectional thresholds.
So, these are required for minimum screening.
For the flagship two-year MBA/PGP route, CAT is the standard entrance examination used by the IIMs.
But a more important question is what’s the age limit for admission?
For the regular two-year MBA/PGP, there is generally no upper age limit comparable to many government entrance examinations.
This means a candidate does not become automatically ineligible simply because they are older than the typical CAT applicant. However, age rules can be different for specific programmes, particularly undergraduate-integrated programmes.
For the MBA 2026-28 batch, IIM Calcutta's published admission policy used CAT 2025 scores. The process included minimum CAT sectional and overall thresholds, followed by further shortlisting and selection stages.
For Open-category candidates, the initial CAT threshold was:
IIM Calcutta also considered academic performance, gender diversity, and other components during selection.
Before submitting your CAT application, check a few important things like verifying graduation marks, confirming your category correctly, preparing for CAT strategically, and more.
But eligibility is not the only door.
What happens after your CAT score and application for IIM also depends on how you have prepared yourself. That’s why consulting with professionals is a smarter approach students follow nowadays.
So, if you are not just planning for IIM admission but also determined to get into one of the colleges, connect with the experts at Ask4clg and move confidently towards your dream.
No. The regular two-year IIM PGP/MBA generally does not have an upper age limit. However, age restrictions may apply to specific programmes such as IPM.
Yes. Final-year graduating students can apply for admission to the IIM MBA/PGP program. Once selected, they need to submit their degrees by the prescribed time limit of the institute.
Not at all for basic MBA eligibility. The main academic criteria would be a qualifying bachelor’s degree. Nevertheless, certain IIMs might factor in Class 12 grades while shortlisting applicants for admission.
Yes, at some IIMs, like IIM Calcutta, they consider Class 10 scores as well when selecting MBA candidates. Hence, your scores from school could make a difference even though that isn’t the primary eligibility criterion.
Not the conventional two-year MBA/PGP route. This path needs you to have a bachelor’s degree. If students wish to join an IIM after their Class 12 studies, then they can look at alternate undergraduate programs like the IPM program available in selected IIMs.
No. Fresh graduates without any work experience are eligible to apply for the regular two-year PGP/MBA program. While work experience may play a role in the selection process at certain IIMs, it is not a compulsory criterion for eligibility.
CAT is usually required for getting into the normal two-year program at IIMs. But some programs at specialized IIMs have their own test procedure, or they use different scores altogether. For instance, GMAT is used for IIM Calcutta’s MBAEx program.
For regular IIM MBA/PGP admissions, the generally prescribed cut-off is 50%. Reaching this cut-off makes one eligible academically, but it doesn’t ensure that you make it to the list of IIMs.
Yes. Recognised professional qualifications such as CA, CS and CMA/ICWA can be considered as qualifying credentials under applicable IIM/CAT admission rules. Candidates should verify the specific admission policy of their target IIM.
Eligibility criteria remain more or less the same, while selection criteria are different. For the MBA program 2026–28 at IIM Calcutta, CAT 2025 was one of the criteria, along with academic merit and others. Minimum CAT cut-off and weightages for selection at IIM Calcutta are institute-specific.
